Many Saugus car accidents occur on local roads or on Rte. 1, which lies along the Square One Mall and provides drivers with access to Interstate 95 and Rte. 128. Saugus is a busy commuting hub, located between Boston and Salem and its roads see motor vehicles, commercial trucks and public transportation buses as well as bicyclists and pedestrians. Nearby communities include Lynnfield, Lynn, Revere, Melrose and Wakefield.

Car accidents can occur when you least expect it. They can happen when cars drive too fast through neighborhoods, business areas and school zones, where speed limits are lowered to 20 mph under state law. Drivers who text and drive or use their cell phones are a growing cause of car accidents, as are truck drivers who make mistakes or fail to follow safety regulations. Drunk drivers are another frequent cause of car accidents.

Many still remember the tanker truck which erupted into flames on Route 1 near the Square One Mall in July 2011. According to The Boston Globe and other news reports, the truck was owned by P.J. Murphy Transportation of Methuen. The driver lost control and ended up rolling over a guardrail. He had been transporting gasoline, which spilled and exploded around 2 a.m., waking neighbors for miles.

The truck driver became trapped in his cab and died. Several cars crashed into the truck and four drivers were transported to local hospitals. One man required emergency surgery for serious burns. Meanwhile, the gasoline leaked and the fire kept spreading, forcing one woman to evacuate her home.

Car accidents can also happen in parking lots. The Square One Mall is a popular spot for shopping, with more than 100 stores. Drivers often want to get in and out of parking lots quickly, without watching for pedestrians. Cell phone use and failure to check for pedestrians before backing out of a parking space are two of the most common causes of parking lot accidents.

Pedestrians have been seriously injured or killed by negligent drivers in Saugus. One painful story occurred in 2009. A Saugus High School senior made the wrong decision to drive home after post-prom activities. He veered onto the sidewalk near the intersection of Grove and Essex streets, hitting and killing a 67-year-old woman walking her dog. The woman's daughter was also there and seriously injured in the pedestrian accident.

According to The Boston Herald, the high school senior pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of motor vehicle homicide by reckless operation in 2010 and was sentenced to serve six months in jail. At sentencing, prosecutors said he had fallen asleep after a night which involved drinking, but his Breathalyzer test showed a blood alcohol level below the legal limit.
