About Paragard
Paragard is a T-shaped intrauterine device (IUD) which is inserted into a women’s uterus to prevent pregnancy. Paragard is hormone-free and the active ingredient is a thin layer of copper. The manufacturer, CooperSurgical, reports the device is removable and patients can use it for up to 10 years. However, many women have experienced complications sooner.
Regulatory Background
First approved in 1984, Paragard was labeled as a birth control for women in monogamous relationships with at least one child. In 2005, the FDA approved label revisions, drastically expanding use of the device. At that point, doctors had the option of prescribing Paragard to women from age 16 to menopause.
Complications from Paragard
Paragard can cause serious and debilitating complications, along with emotional stress and pain.
The FDA has received reports of 15 deaths allegedly caused by Paragard. There have also been more than 40,000 reports of adverse reactions and more than 15,500 cases of severe complications.
One of the greatest risks is Paragard can move and migrate. Patients can suffer painful internal complications when the device shifts, which can require surgery or hysterectomy or result in infertility.
Paragard can cause complications while the device is inserted. But a woman can also be injured if the device breaks during removal or if copper is left behind in the body and causes inflammation.
Paragard complications may include:
- IUD migration
- IUD removal complications, such as breakage or inflammation caused by copper left in the body
- IUD expulsion or falling out of the uterus
- IUD embedded in the uterus
- Infection and/or abscess
- Scarring and damage to other organs
- Perforation of the uterine wall or cervix
- Ectopic pregnancy
Complications may also result in:
- Surgery
- Hysterectomy
- Infertility
- Inability to work
- Emotional distress
- Death
