What are the major types of head injuries?

Healthline discusses the different kinds of head injuries, along with some symptoms victims and their loved ones should look out for.

  • Hematoma, when blood clots inside the brain. These can cause pressure to build up inside the skull and cause anything from loss of consciousness to permanent brain damage.
  • Hemorrhage, which is uncontrolled bleeding. A subarachnoid hemorrhage is bleeding in the space around the brain, while an intracerebral hemorrhage is bleeding within the tissues of the brain.
  • Concussion, caused by a blow or impact to the head. These result from the brain striking the walls of the skull, leading to bruising or tearing. Loss of function may be temporary, but severe or repeated injuries to the brain lead to permanent damage.
  • Edema, or swelling. Although most injuries cause tissue swelling, swelling in the brain is a much more serious injury, as the confines of the skull can cause pressure to build up.
  • Diffuse axonal injury, which is an injury that doesn’t cause bleeding but still causes damage. These injuries aren’t as obvious as other types of head and brain injuries, but can cause permanent and even fatal injuries.
  • Skull fractures, which because of their strength and thickness, will almost always result in a corresponding brain injury.

What are the most common causes of head injuries?

Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that head injuries are “one of the most common causes of disability and death in adults.” They also report the most common causes of traumatic head injuries are motor vehicle accidents, sports-related accidents, violence, and falls.

The biological reason these head and brain injuries occur is due to something called “coup-countrecoup.” Per Johns Hopkins:

When there is a direct blow to the head, shaking of the child (as seen in many cases of child abuse), or a whiplash-type injury (as seen in motor vehicle accidents), the bruising of the brain and the damage to the internal tissue and blood vessels is due to a mechanism called coup-countrecoup. A bruise directly related to trauma, at the site of impact, is called a coup (pronounced COO) lesion.

As the brain jolts backwards, it can hit the skull on the opposite side and cause a bruise called a countrecoup lesion. The jarring of the brain against the sides of the skull can cause shearing (tearing) of the internal lining, tissues, and blood vessels that may cause internal bleeding, bruising, or swelling of the brain.

What should I do if I’ve sustained a head injury?

If you or a loved one have sustained a head injury, consult a doctor or visit an emergency room immediately. Follow your doctor's instructions and ask about all the necessary testing, including MRI scans, CT scans and Positron Emission Tomography (PET). For mild concussions, rest and avoidance of bright lights and computer screens for a period of time may be sufficient for recovery. For more serious injuries, rehabilitation may include swallowing and speech therapy, and therapies to help restore cognition.

Who is liable for my Boston head injury?

Depending on how a head injury is sustained, liable parties may include:
