Thinking Pool Safety Saves Lives
It is summer in Massachusetts and that means it is time to enjoy the pool - and think about safety. Each year, thousands of children are injured in pool-related accidents and hundreds lose their lives. Commit to protecting your children and family with our safety tips, so you can enjoy your backyard or community pool this summer.
Keep these safety tips in mind:
- Supervise children at all times. If you are in a group, it's easy to get distracted so consider designating someone a "pool watcher."
- Keep a phone with you at the pool in case there is an emergency and you need to call for help. But do not use it to search the web or check your social media accounts. These are distractions.
- Remember small children can drown in kiddie pools and watch them accordingly.

By: David White, Esq.
All too often, bicyclists suffer serious injuries caused by inattentive motorists. Knowing and following the rules of the road, and always riding defensively, are the best ways to protect yourself from harm.
The most important step in protecting yourself financially is to purchase insurance on your personal vehicle. This could provide coverage for injuries, medical expenses or lost earnings when you are riding your bike and hurt by a motorist with inadequate insurance.
What are the two smartest things a cyclist can do with regard to insurance?
- Purchase adequate amounts of Underinsured and Uninsured Motorist coverage
- Purchase adequate Medical Payments coverage

Why You Should Designate a Hospital Advocate
Hospitals are supposed to be a place for healing, but they're also fertile ground for medical errors. Each year, approximately 195,000 people across the United States die from hospital medical errors.
This means you must protect yourself. Read all about why you should bring a medical advocate to the hospital, and about your right to request your medical records and the protections offered by the Massachusetts Patients' Bill of Rights.

How Safe is Your Doctor?
Whether you're choosing a primary care physician or a specialist, it's important to know who's providing you medical treatment and their safety record.
The good news is that the information is just a few keystrokes away. The Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine offers an online database that you can search to find out if your doctor has:
- Made a malpractice payment in the past 10 years
- Any criminal convictions in the past 10 years
- Any hospital or board disciplinary actions
